Is Rolfing painful?

Rolfing has progressed as fascial research has advanced. It was, in the past, known for being painful. This is no longer the way we work. While it does involve deep manipulation of the fascia, clients find the work relaxing and engaging. When tissue is tight and restricted, it may feel more intense, but I always communicate with you to keep the work within your level of comfort. You are fully in charge, and we will work together throughout the session. Most clients find Rolfing to be deep, slow, and most importantly – enduring.

How is Rolfing different from massage and chiropractic?

While Chiropractic, massage therapy and Rolfing can be complementary practices, they are each distinct. Chiropractic focuses on the bones and skeletal system to alleviate symptoms of pain or tension within the body.  The goal of massage is to relax muscles and improve range of muscle movement and circulation.

Rolfing works with the soft tissues of the entire body – fascia, muscles, ligaments and tendons using sustained, deep pressure and client movement to release chronic patterns. Rolfing helps bring balance and integration to the body.  It also involves client participation throughout the sessions.

What should you expect in a Rolfing session?

Each Rolfing session lasts approximately 80 minutes. In the first session we will establish goals and take a detailed history. A postural assessment follows during which I observe your movement and holding patterns. In subsequent sessions we will revisit your goals and assess changes since the last session. On the massage table, I will then work on specific areas to release tension and improve alignment. You will be engaged in the Rolfing sessions. As I work with the tissue, I may ask you for breath and movements.

Do I need to complete the whole Ten Series?

The Ten Series is the most effective and sequential way to attain long term and lasting structural changes. It is my preferred way of working and clients feel and appreciate the continuity of the sessions. With each session we are able to go deeper into the holding patterns as the body allows our previous session’s work to unfold. Having said this, shorter series can be useful in certain instances, and we can discuss this in our first session.

How often do I need to come?

Sessions are spaced according to the needs of the client. Typically, clients book sessions once a week or every two weeks. This is not a requirement, but it is important to note that each session builds on the previous so frequent sessions are encouraged. After completing the 10 Series, clients often return every 3-4 months for ongoing sessions.

Is Rolfing covered by my insurance?

That depends on your insurance provider. It is best to contact your provider directly to inquire. In my experience, some clients receive full reimbursement and others are able to get a portion of the fees covered.
